Barbara Havens-Shirk, LCPC

Barbara Havens-Shirk, LCPC, is a licensed clinical professional counselor in practice in Rockford since 2003.

A native of Texas, Barbara earned her undergraduate degree in psychology, education, and language arts from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, and worked as an educator in public and private schools. She received her graduate degree in clinical psychology from The University of Houston, Clear Lake in 1995, with an emphasis on clinical counseling. Prior to moving to Illinois in 2002, Barbara worked for three major hospital systems in Houston in areas of complementary medicine, disease prevention and management, cardiac and cancer treatment, and research and program development. Barbara trained at the Mind/Body Medical Institute based at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and served as behaviorist, teacher, therapist, researcher, and facilitator for this program at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

For the past 12 years, Barbara has been in private practice in Rockford, working with clients suffering from all types of distress and trauma, abuse, family disruption, and child displacement. She has extensive training and experience in play therapy and counsels children as young as preschool age and their caregivers. With a practice philosophy that values the integrity and resilience of human spirit, mind, and heart, Barbara seeks to help individuals and families achieve wholeness, clarity, and peace.
